((D: My story is laaaaate! -scrambles around- Forgive this Kittie!))
Five Golden Couples
By Kittie
I’m sure I had a story, a most deviously interesting one at that, but it seems to have faded. Perhaps it hadn’t been as outstanding as I’d thought it had been. Or maybe I’ve just forgotten it as I seemingly often do.
But it had something to do with rings, I know that much. Five of them, if I’m not mistaken. And golden, of that much I’m sure.
Something having to do with five golden rings...
~*~
The felimorph sat at the low coffee table. Her legs were crossed Indian-style, and the end of a pencil was clamped in her mouth. Her silvery blue eyes were narrowed in concentration, and the tan-furred tail that stretched out behind her was thrashing irritably. Resting on the table before her was a piece of lined paper. It was blank, mocking her with its untouched emptiness.
She bit down onto the pencil, turning it with her fingers a few times. ‘Rotten, evil, awful rings...’
A silver anthropomorphic feline stood passively in the doorway. Her ears were perked forward in mild interest, her olive green eyes attentively watching. A smile spread across her lips as she took a short breath. “Kittie!”
“NYA!” The cat-girl jumped, turning around and jabbing the pencil toward the other feline. A pout crossed her face as she recognized the newcomer. “Millyyyyy, I don’t know what to wriiiiite.”
The silver cat shot a skeptical look to the girl.
Her right eye twitched. “What comes to your mind first when you hear ‘golden rings’? Something interesting.”
Milly sighed. “Wedding rings?”
Kittie blinked. “And um, anything else?”
“... Engagement rings?”
“That’s all?”
“What, not good enough for you?”
“I was hoping for something more interesting.”
“How is that not interesting?!”
“Er...”
Milly stared, crossing her arms over her chest. “Beggars can’t be choosers.”
Kittie paused, staring at the blank paper. “Meh.”
~*~
The angel stared at the shining ring he held lightly between his index finger and thumb. It was plain and simple in design. A smooth golden circle and nothing more. It almost seemed to glow in the light he was in.
Though the ring itself wasn’t strange in the least, the way he’d come across it had been. It had seemingly fallen from the sky, landing right in front of him. Curiosity had gotten the better of him as he’d walked over to see what exactly it was.
There was the ring, waiting happily on the ground for him to pick up.
He couldn’t quite remember what had convinced him to go ahead and take the ring. Unfortunately, now he couldn’t part with it. Not that he really wanted to. It was a strange little ring, seeing as there aren’t too many rings that just appear out of thin air.
He sighed, wondering what exactly he was going to do with the ring. He could just get rid of it, but... no. The ring seemed to have a strange little mind of it’s own. A hypnotic one at that. ‘Keep me, keep me!’ It seemed to say. He was just about to pocket the ring when a voice rang out behind him.
“What’s that?”
He spun around, holding his hands behind his back, the ring clamped firmly within them. Before him was a tan-orange zafara, raven blue hair cascading down in loose waves. Her lavender eyes glinted curiously, watching him.
“What’s what?” He answered after a moment.
“The thing you’re trying to hide behind your back.”
He blinked. “I’m not hiding anything.”
She opened her mouth to retort, but quickly closed it, letting a half-smile drift over her face. “Oh. Okay then.” She slowly walked toward him, eventually passing him.
He watched her carefully, wondering what she was doing. As she passed by, he turned, attempting to keep the mystery ring hidden from her for reasons even he wasn’t quite sure of.
Suddenly, she snapped around, lunging forward and reaching for his hands. “Eh?!” He jerked backward just as she’d grasped his hands, causing her to topple into him. The domino effect kicked in as he fell as well.
The zafara looked up, a victorious grin on her face despite her unceremonious fall. A small golden ring was clenched between her fingers. Her eyes travelled to her prize, a confused look falling onto her face. “A ring?”
“Er-”
“Who’s this for?” She asked, looking into his crystal blue eyes.
“Uh...”
~*~
The lupe stood, watching the dim light the woods took in reflect on the golden surface of the ring. It wasn’t a very elaborate ring, there was not precious gem embedded on it, nor was there an intricate design of any sort upon its surface. It was a simple, golden hoop.
And he hoped that was all he really needed.
How he came across it was somewhat confusing, even more so was the person whom he’d gotten it from. She’d been wearing a heavy cloak, which was odd, considering how much she giggled and danced. Two triangular bumps stood at the hood of her cloak, signalling either a pair of very oddly shaped horns or, perhaps, cat ears.
Cat ears would probably make more sense, considering the being had a tail to match. She’d approached him, skipping lightly, humming a jumbled tune. Then, in classic “wanna buy a watch?” style, she’d lifted a side of the cloak, revealing four shining, identical golden rings.
What happened next was blurry, he couldn’t quite remember how he’d ended up with one of the rings. Not that it really mattered, he couldn’t bring himself to get rid of the ring anyway.
He paced lightly, going over what he was going to say in his mind. Asking of a date or two was one thing, as were giving gifts. What he was planning to do brought on a whole new level of stress and anxiety.
His head snapped up as he heard a door open and close. He turned toward the doorway, watching as the darigan zafara walked in. Her spectacled orbs curiously eyed the ring within his hand. “What do you have there?”
~*~
A gunshot resounded through the thinning forest, followed by a light ‘ting!’. A small “Erk!” erupted from the tree canopies. The cybunny quickly scanned the treetops, looking for the source of the noise. When he’d confirmed that there was no one there, he turned his attention to the golden object on the ground.
He stooped over to see what it was. It appeared to be a ring... with a bullet stuck in the hole where a finger was meant to go.
He breathed out a short laugh, picking up the ring and turning it over a few times. It seemed to be just an ordinary, plain ring, sans the bullet. It wasn’t anything too amazing, to be sure. A thick golden hoop and nothing more.
Carefully, he forced the bullet from the ring. He looked around the inside, finding no carved inscriptions. “Weird.”
“Was there someone there?”
The cybunny turned to the approaching aisha. “I guess not.”
Her eyes travelled to the ring he was twirling around in his fingers. “Is that a... ring?”
The cybunny nodded, lifting it up.
“Where’d that come from?” She asked, stepping forward. Her eyes sparkled lightly as her mind pondered the possibilities.
His eyes widened slightly, noticing the emotion in her own. “It’snotwhatyouthink!”
~*~
“For your love.” The tag, artfully ribboned to the ring, read.
“For my love...” The young gelert repeated to himself, his lips pursing slightly.
He wasn’t quite sure where the ring had come from, but it had been set on the side table in his room. It had been waiting for him in all it’s shining glory when he’d found it.
It wasn’t like it was cryptic or anything. Quite the opposite, really. “For your love.” was about as straightforward as could be.
Still, seemingly innocent things were always suspect to, well, not-so-innocent things. He should probably get someone to check it out and make sure it wasn’t some funky, magical ring that would blow up the earth, or something to that extent.
He turned toward the doorway, heading out to ask everyone what they thought of it, when a tapping sound at his window distracted him.
A grinning bori was leaning on the outer windowsill, waving energetically. Her eyes were sparkling happily.
He stopped his exit, heading toward the window and opening the pane.
“Hey there you!” She greeted.
“Hey.” He responded, matching her smile with one of his own.
“What’s that? A ring?” She pointed to the glinting gold in his hand.
“Hm? Yeah...”
~*~
“Hey Vanilla, mail for ya.” The disco shoyru blandly stated, tossing a small package toward the electric kacheek.
He caught the envelope, staring into the unmarked outside curiously. Slowly, he tore it open, letting a golden ring and a message fall into his hands.
The ring was quite plain, a simple band of shining gold, but it was beautiful all the same. He blinked, wondering who would’ve sent him something like this.
He turned his attention to the note that had come with it.
‘Hey Nilla,
I just wanted to tell you that I’m very, very sorry.
There were so many complications in what I was doing that I didn’t expect.
I’m so sorry.
I’ve been gone for far too long. I miss you more than anything. More than anyone. I hope to be back soon, though. I’m sorry to keep you waiting for so long. I’m so sorry.
I’m not going to break my promise. Just promise you’ll be there when I get back.
And again, I’m sorry.
Love ya,
Amy’
He felt like ice, frozen to the spot. Slowly, a sad smile crossed his face. His hand subconsciously gripped the little ring tighter.
~*~
“Muahaha!” The cat girl giggled insanely, clutching the now-full paper close. “And I shall unleash my evil plans! ... Tomorrow!”
Her silver-furred companion snatched the paper from the giddy girl. Her eyes quickly scanned the paper, brow raising in question. “None of these are finished. Is this you just being lazy?”
“Never!” She jumped up. “It’s merely me calculating the misfire factor and unreliability of character reaction to such points!”
“... Or, it’s just you being lazy.”
“Shush. Relinquish my plans.”
“You’re an idiot.”
